First Grade Teachers
First grade is a year of tremendous growth as students become more fluent readers and writers. They expand their phonics knowledge, practice spelling and word patterns, and begin to write complete sentences and short stories. In math, students strengthen their understanding of numbers to 120, learn basic addition and subtraction strategies within 20, and begin working with simple word problems.
Socially and emotionally, first graders are developing empathy, teamwork, and perseverance. They’re learning that mistakes are part of the learning process. By the end of first grade, students see themselves as readers, writers, mathematicians, and friends who are ready for the next big leap in learning.
