Welcome to First Grade!
In First Grade our main focus is to enhance your child’s
reading and writing skills through whole group and small group
instruction. We spend a great deal of time focusing on comprehension
skills, using both fiction and non-fiction texts. We will use Writer’s
Workshop for writing instruction. The children will focus on narrative,
opinion and informational writing.
In math, children will focus on counting and representing numbers to 120, word problems, addition, and subtraction.
Forces of Motion - Push and Pull
Patterns of the Earth, Moon and Sun
Physical Properties of Earth Materials (rocks, minerals, soil, etc.)

**First Grade students should read for 20 minutes every night.**
Please read with your child every night. Newsletters are
sent home weekly, please look at these for important dates and upcoming
meetings. Most importantly, parents are encouraged to ask questions so
they may know how to help their child succeed.
Reading- Students are tested to determine their reading
level at the beginning, middle, and end of the year, using the mClass
assessment developed by the State of North Carolina.
Math-Students will be given a mid-year and a summative math
assessment created by the State of North Carolina. Students will be
tested on the concepts that were taught during the year.
