Asheboro City Schools student transfer window is open with digital applications for student admission, reassignment, and release. The window for applications is March 1st to June 1st each year. Applications should be completed prior to the deadline of June 1st for students who wish to attend a school other than the one they are assigned. | La ventana de transferencia de estudiantes de las Escuelas de la Ciudad de Asheboro ahora está abierta con solicitudes digitales disponibles para la admisión, reasignación y liberación de estudiantes. Cada año la ventanilla para las solicitudes es del 1 de marzo hasta el 1 de junio. Las solicitudes deben ser completadas antes del 1 de junio para los estudiantes que desean asistir a una escuela distinta a la que se les asigna. First Grade

Welcome to First Grade!

Literacy

In First Grade our main focus is to enhance your child’s reading and writing skills through whole group and small group instruction. We spend a great deal of time focusing on comprehension skills, using both fiction and non-fiction texts. We will use Writer’s Workshop for writing instruction. The children will focus on narrative, opinion and informational writing.

Math

In math, children will focus on counting and representing numbers to 120, word problems, addition, and subtraction.

Science

Forces of Motion - Push and Pull

Patterns of the Earth, Moon and Sun

Physical Properties of Earth Materials (rocks, minerals, soil, etc.)

Living Things (people, plants and animals)

Social Studies

Communities and Holidays

Understanding Rules

Maps and Landforms

Student Expectations

**First Grade students should read for 20 minutes every night.**

Parent Expectations

Please read with your child every night. Newsletters are sent home weekly, please look at these for important dates and upcoming meetings. Most importantly, parents are encouraged to ask questions so they may know how to help their child succeed.

Testing

Reading- Students are tested to determine their reading level at the beginning, middle, and end of the year, using the mClass assessment developed by the State of North Carolina.

Math-Students will be given a mid-year and a summative math assessment created by the State of North Carolina. Students will be tested on the concepts that were taught during the year.
