AHS Construction Updates
AHS building
ASHEBORO - The Asheboro High School construction project is in its third and final phase which includes renovations to the original 1949 AHS building. Renovations to the infrastructure include updated HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as ADA concerns. These renovations will bring the building into the 21st century to continue serving students for another 50 plus years.

“It’s hard to believe we have come this far,” said Dr. Aaron Woody, superintendent of Asheboro City Schools. “It feels like yesterday we were breaking ground on the new 40,000 square foot building addition. I am extremely proud of the work that has taken place and I cannot say enough about the support we have received from our county commissioners. We greatly appreciate the Randolph County Commissioners for partnering with us to make this dream a reality,” he added.

While the building is under construction, students and staff will utilize the addition, Comet Corner, and a mobile campus that is being built on the practice field at Asheboro High School.

“From Highway 64, motorists may have likely noticed construction on the practice field and a number of mobile units. This is where students and teachers will relocate while the original construction is being renovated. We anticipate the sixth and final mobile unit will be installed by May 3,” explained Dr. Woody.

The mobile campus will be equipped with six units altogether. Four of the units will house 10 classrooms each. The other two units will be used as a cafeteria and administrative offices. By mid-May, construction crews anticipate all utilities will be connected; ramps and steps will begin arriving around April 27 and should be completed by May 18; concrete sidewalks are scheduled to be completed by June 1; then an access road will be completed shortly after the sidewalks. According to Facility and Maintenance Director for Asheboro City Schools, Ed Keller, substantial completion on the mobile campus should wrap up by June 12.

Renovation of the original Asheboro High School building is slated for completion by December 2022. Students and staff anticipate being back in the renovated building by January 2023.

“This is an exciting time in Asheboro City Schools. With direction from our board members and support from our county commissioners and community, we are constantly working to create innovative opportunities for all students in a safe and inclusive learning environment,” said Dr. Woody.
