At the June meeting of the Asheboro City Board of
Education, Superintendent Dr. Aaron Woody, announced the 2020-2021 Teacher of
the Year and Teacher of the Year finalist.
“It’s with great pleasure that I introduce the 2020-2021 Asheboro City Schools Teacher of the Year, Mr. Steve Watson, “said Dr. Woody. “Mr. Watson has incredible passion for his students and for our community. He goes above and beyond his duties as a teacher. Mr. Watson is a mentor and a community volunteer. He takes the initiative to meet the needs of all his students. Mr. Watson believes in creating equitable opportunities for all students and he makes learning meaningful and engaging. Mr. Watson is a teacher-leader and a true asset to our school district!”
About the
Winner:
Mr. Steve Watson is a physical education teacher at Charles W. McCrary Elementary School. Mr. Watson has not only served students and colleagues at his school for almost two decades, he has served our community in a number of roles. Mr. Watson is founder of the ACS Lacrosse Club, the Mustang Girls’ Volleyball Club, and the Boys Basketball Club. Additionally, he has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to create the Doghouse Build project, which allows third-grade students to apply their math skills to build dog houses that are then donated to the Randolph County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RCSPCA). Mr. Watson has also spearheaded the Mustang Family Build Day, which provides an opportunity for McCrary staff, students, and families to work on a Habitat house together.

Finalist:
The Asheboro City Schools Teacher of the Year finalist is Ms. Bridgette Kiser from South Asheboro Middle School. Ms. Kiser has been part of the Asheboro City Schools family since 2018. Prior to joining our team, she served students in the Randolph County School System for close to ten years. She participated in the 2019-2020 cohort of Asheboro City Schools’ Teacher Leadership Academy. Ms. Kiser says she is relentless about impressing upon her students that, “Education, and the personal development that comes with the pursuit of that education, gives students the power to take hold of opportunities, adventures, and dreams.”
