Dr. Penny Crooks Named ACS 2021 Principal of the Year
On Wednesday, September 16, Dr. Penny Crooks of Asheboro High School was announced the 2021 Asheboro City Schools Principal of the Year! The district’s principal team decides this prestigious recognition.

Dr. Crooks began her North Carolina teaching career with Asheboro City Schools in 2003. Since that time, she has served as a teacher and curriculum coach, assistant principal, and principal of both Balfour Elementary School (2017-2019) and now Asheboro High School. Additionally, she has taught at UNC-Greensboro on topics such as Content Area Literacy, Reading in the Content Area, English Methods, and Writing in the Elementary and Middle Grades. Dr. Crooks has co- authored several articles and presented at the 2009 National Reading Conference.

Under Dr. Crooks' leadership, Asheboro High School has exceeded expected growth the last two years and was listed in the top 50 percent of schools statewide for test score growth results. The Piedmont-Triad Education Consortium recognized Asheboro High School as a Signature School in early 2019. Finally, Dr. Crooks has played a key role in the development of the new building addition at Asheboro High School.

Dr. Crooks will be formally recognized at the October 8 meeting of the Asheboro City Board of Education.
