The Asheboro City Board of Education met for their regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, April 11. Madam Chair Gidget Kidd called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, the board approved the meeting agenda.

Action Items

The Ad Hoc committee for selecting a new board member to fill the unexpired term of former member, Kyle Lamb, was chaired by Baxter Hammer. The committee also consisted of board members Michael Smith and Gus Agudelo. Madam Chair Gidget Kidd shared a detailed sequence of events from the time the board position was vacated. Upon motion by Baxter Hammer and seconded by Archie Priest, the Asheboro City Board of Education voted to accept the recommendation of Mr. Ryan Patton to the board.

Swearing In Ceremony

Following the motion to approve, Mr. Ryan Patton was sworn in to the Asheboro City Board of Education by Randolph County Commissioners Chairman, Darrell Frye. Mr. Patton’s wife, Kelly Patton, and their daughter accompanied him as he took the oath of office. Mr. Patton will serve until the next board member election (November 2019), at which point he will run for office in order to be elected for the remainder of the unexpired term as detailed in board policy 2115, Unexpired Term Fulfillment.

Reports

Allison Schafer with the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) presented a report on the survey results collected from members of the community and staff of Asheboro City Schools. In her report she highlighted various leadership qualities of most importance to stakeholders taking the survey. She facilitated a discussion with the board to develop a leadership profile that the board may use in the search for the new ACS superintendent.

Special Recognitions

The Asheboro City Board of Education recognized the Randolph County Public Library as the spotlighted April Community Partner. Library staff have supported families at Charles W. McCrary Elementary School by providing childcare for the youngest McCrary Mustangs. Ms. Ann Pryblowski and her staff bring books, board games, and activities to engage our youngest children, while families meet with their student’s teachers in the classroom. In the words of McCrary principal, Ms. Julie Brady, “the library is our greatest childcare partner and we could not have had as much success with our Academic Family Teacher Team (AFTT) nights without their partnership.”

The board spotlight featured professional development that has taken place at Charles W. McCrary Elementary School this past school year. Based on feedback gathered from the Teacher Working Conditions survey, professional development was an area for the school to improve. This year, the school has engaged in professional learning opportunities each month focusing on a number of subject areas. Administrators have received positive feedback from their teachers thanks to this endeavor.

Information and Recommendations

Following special recognitions, the Asheboro City Board of Education approved the Consent Agenda and then moved to Information and Recommendations.

Dr. Drew Maerz, director of Testing and Accountability, shared seven policies for 30-day review. All board policies under review are listed on the Asheboro City Schools website for feedback from the community for a 30-day period. If there is no feedback, the policies will be approved at the May 2019 board meeting.

Mr. D.R. Cash, director of Student Support Services, shared feedback collected during the 30-day review window regarding the proposed 2020-2021 district calendar. Upon motion by Phillip Cheek and seconded by Baxter Hammer, the board unanimously approved the district calendar for school year 2020-2021.
