The Hall of Fame Night was held on Friday, October 4th.
The first inductee for the Class of 2019 is: Ken Morgan
Ken Morgan is being honored posthumously (his family is pictured above, bottom left).
An AHS graduate in 1969, Ken Morgan excelled in football and basketball. He was a three-year varsity letter recipient in football and was a two-year letterman in basketball. Following his senior season, he was named All-Conference and Most Valuable lineman. Ken Morgan was participated in the East-West All-Star Game and the Carolinas All-Star Game. He was named Mr. Blue Comet for the graduating class of 1969.
Ken Morgan’s athletic career continued at Elon College (now University), where he was named All-Conference four times as a tight end. As a Fightin’ Christian (as Elon athletes were known then), Ken was named All-Conference in 1971 and 1972. And, Ken Morgan set himself from thousands of student-athletes to wear the blue and white, as he was drafted by the Denver Broncos of the NFL.
Our next inductee is the: 1975 Baseball Team (pictured above, bottom right)
The 1975 Baseball team won the championship of the Western North Carolina Activities Association, ending the season with a 16-7 record and the moniker State Champion! At the time, this team was only the third Blue Comets to win State Championship honors. The team rode strong pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense to a South Piedmont Conference championship, in a season where 2 different pitchers pitched no-hitters against Concord and Thomasville. In playoff action, the blue and white defeated North Davidson 8-0 and McDowell County 3-2. Post season honors included Randolph County Coach of the Year – Darrell Rich – and South Piedmont Player of the Year – Chris McKinnon.
