Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: Gustavo Agudelo

As we honor and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to take time to recognize Hispanic and Latino members of the ACS community. Today, we highlight Gustavo Agudelo who served on the Asheboro City School Board of Education from 2011-2024. Thank you for your dedication to ACS!
1. Can you tell us about your heritage and how it has shaped your personal and professional journey?
I come from a traditional Colombian family that taught me the values of respect, community, hard work, and strong moral principles. These values have shaped my life both personally and professionally.
2. Who has been the biggest influence in your life, and how have they impacted your understanding of your heritage?
My greatest influences have always been my parents. They came to America with the dream of building a better future for their children, while never losing sight of the values and teachings passed down by their own parents. Their dedication...[is] the driving force behind my commitment to honoring our culture.
3. Can you recommend any books, music, or films that you feel beautifully represent Hispanic and Latino culture?
One of my favorite authors is Gabriel García Márquez, and his book One Hundred Years of Solitude is a masterpiece that captures the richness of Latin American culture. In terms of music, I am a lover of all Latin rhythms, but Salsa holds a special place in my heart. A film that deeply resonates with me is RADICAL, as it beautifully connects Latino culture with the power of education.
4. As an advocate for education, how do you see the role of community and family in supporting Hispanic and Latino students' success?
Hispanic and Latino families are known for their deep bonds and unwavering support of one another. There is nothing more important than investing in the education of our children. They are the future, the next generation, and they will carry our voices forward. In communities like Asheboro, which has been so welcoming and supportive, it's essential that we teach our children to engage, contribute, and take pride in being integral members of the community. Together, we can create a stronger, more unified future.
