McCrary Elementary School BOYS ONLY book club
Who is invited: Boys in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade; along with their fathers, grandfathers, uncles, etc. (a male adult over the age of 18 that is an important part of your child’s life. Your child can attend without an adult- but must be picked up on time!
When will we meet: Every other Monday from 5:00-6:00 p.m.
What is the club: This is a chance for boys at our school to read and talk about books with male adults and role models. Boys can see how men use reading in their lives and why reading isn't just “a girl thing.” Boys can also look at some books that are written just for guys.
Something to work for:
If boys attend 4 meetings, they are given a Marvelous Mustangs t-shirt!
Reading a variety of genres: The boys book club has a bulletin board outside of the library. When a boy finishes reading a book, he can write a “book talk” or book commercial for that book. The boys write a script telling a bit about the book- without giving anything away! We then record the boys reading their scripts in front of the green screen. Ms. Lassiter puts a QR code that links to each video on the bulletin board in the hallway. This bulletin board then serves as video book recommendations from members of the boys book club!
Why is this club important?
-Statistically, boys earn 70 percent of Ds and Fs and fewer than half of the As.
-80 percent of high school dropouts are male.
-Children who do not read proficiently by the end of the fourth grade remain poor readers through high school and are less likely to graduate.
Let's work together to get boys interested in reading - before it is too late!
