Asheboro City Board of Education August Meeting
ASHEBORO – On Thursday, the Asheboro City Board of Education met for their regularly-scheduled meeting. Chairman Kyle Lamb called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, the board approved the meeting agenda.

      Following the approval of the agenda, the Asheboro City Board of Education heard from students who participated in college tours this summer under the leadership of Ms. Vanessa Brooks and Ms. Robin Harris. Students visited UNCG, Winston-Salem State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State, and various other colleges and universities. For many students, this was the first time they had visited a college campus. The tours included overviews of academic programs, information on the application process, and a chance to talk with current college students.

      Following special recognitions, the board approved the consent agenda before moving into Information, Reports, and Recommendations. Mr. Jordi Roman provided an update on our successful Dual-Language Immersion program which is in its third year at Balfour Elementary and second year at Lindley Park Elementary. Dr. Sean McWherter then discussed new curriculum focused on social and emotional health for elementary students. He and administrators from Asheboro High School also shared discipline data information from 2016-17. Dr. McWherter’s final presentation highlighted the results of parent and staff surveys that were gathered at the end of the 2017-18 school year. Dr. Aaron Woody concluded information reports, by providing an update on Asheboro City Schools instructional framework and curriculum. 

      Reports were provided on the district’s upcoming events and Points of Pride. Upcoming special events include: Asheboro High School’s first home football game on Friday, August 17 against Randleman High School; open house events taking place August 21, 22, and 23; the district’s annual convocation taking place Tuesday, August 21; and the first day back to school for students on Monday, August 27. The next Asheboro City Board of Education meeting will be held at the Professional Development Center located on the campus of Asheboro High School on Thursday, September 13. 

Dr. Worrell concluded the meeting by sharing updates on district initiatives with the Asheboro City Board of Education. She discussed:

=       New Teacher Orientation (18 new teachers to the district)

=       Teacher Leadership Academy (13 teachers attending in Ocracoke, NC)

=       Summer Feeding Program

=       Convocation speaker, Dr. Rosemarie Allen

=       Apprenticeship Randolph – four students signed (two to Elastic Therapy, Inc. and two to Post Consumer Brands) 

=       Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

o   13 AP Scholars, 7 AP Scholar with Honor, 1 AP Scholar with Distinction, and 7 students earned AP Seminar and Research Certificates. The students will be celebrated at the annual Advanced Placement reception on Wednesday, December 19 at 4 p.m.

Chairman Lamb adjourned the meeting at approximately 10 p.m. to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing the Superintendent’s evaluation.
