Worrell to Retire as Superintendent of Asheboro City Schools

Dr. Terry W. Worrell has announced she will retire from the position of Superintendent of Asheboro City Schools effective June 30, 2019. After nearly five years of significant progress in the district, Dr. Worrell says her tenure as superintendent has been the most rewarding time of her career, but the best leaders recognize their tenure is for a season.

“This has been a very difficult decision for me. My devotion for the last five years has been to our district, our staff, and most importantly the students and families in Asheboro. In partnership with the Asheboro City Board of Education, we have developed two dynamic dual-language immersion programs, an early college academy, a tremendous capital improvement project, and created opportunities to collaborate with our area education partners and business leaders on the Pathways to Prosperity program.”

Dr. Worrell says she feels secure in her decision thanks to the strong leaders and current status of the district. “Our school district is very strong academically and fiscally. The graduation rate at Asheboro High School is the highest ever in the history of our district. Asheboro City Schools has been recognized as a top ten school district twice in the last three years, and we are one of only three school districts across the state where all schools met or exceeded expected growth two years in a row.”

Madam Chair Gidget Kidd of the Asheboro City Board of Education says, “Dr. Worrell has been a tremendous asset to the district. On day one, Dr. Worrell hit the ground running and she hasn’t stopped since. Under her leadership, our district has strengthened relationships with community partners which creates educational opportunities for all students in Asheboro. She has expanded our advisory councils and strengthened family engagement and collaboration. We are sad to see her go, and are appreciative of the time, energy, and resources she gave for our students, educators, and the community. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”

Dr. Worrell was hired by the Asheboro City Board of Education in June 2014; in June 2019, she will have served as the superintendent for five years. “It’s the right time and I look forward to spending time with my family and I hope to continue to work with educators.”

The Search for a New Superintendent

The Asheboro City Board of Education will discuss the search for Dr. Worrell’s replacement at a special-called meeting on Wednesday, January 30 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Central Office Board Room, located at 1126 S. Park Street in Asheboro. The only item on the agenda for the meeting will be an open session to formally accept the retirement of Dr. Terry W. Worrell and to begin discussing the process to select the next superintendent.
