What is GEAR UP?

  • Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP).
  • Established by the US Department of Education in 1998.
  • Administered by the University of North Carolina Office of the President.
  • Work with cohorts of students, starting no later than in 7th grade.

What are the goals of GEAR UP?

  • Increase academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education.
  • Increase the rate of high school graduation and participation in postsecondary education.
  • Increase GEAR UP students’ and their families’ knowledge of post secondary education options, preparation, and financing.

What services does GEAR UP provide?

  • Parent Involvement Opportunities
  • After school programs, tutoring, and mentoring
  • Transition Programs (9th - 12th)

GEAR UP North Carolina is a partnership involving the University of North Carolina, the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC), the NC Community College System, the NC Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the NC Department of Public Instruction, and the NC State Educational Assistance Authority. Beginning when identified students are in the 7th grade, GEAR UP NC provides ongoing tutoring and mentoring, academic planning and preparation, financial aid planning, college tours for students and counselors, resources for Spanish-speaking students, and professional development opportunities for teachers.

GEAR UP is presently offered at Asheboro High school.
