How do we determine who is an English Language Learner (ELL)?
When students enter school, parents complete a Home Language Survey. If students speak another language other than English, they are given a test (W-APT). The score on this test determines whether they need extra help or not. ESL (English as a Second Language) is a state mandated service that must be provided to students who qualify.
What are the different kinds of services that an ELL can receive?
Students, who need more help with spoken vocabulary, syntax, and word decoding, attend a class that addresses those needs. These Intensive classes meet every day, for 30 minutes. As students progress, they may not need this extra help and they will no longer be pulled out of the classroom.
Students, who are more advanced, can benefit from an ESL teacher working in the regular classroom. The Co-teaching model allows the ESL teacher to scaffold the vocabulary and concepts that are presented in the curriculum.
Students, who are even more advanced are considered Transitional. They do not need extra help from an ESL teacher, but the ESL teachers work in collaboration with their classroom teacher to provide support as needed.
How do we determine what level of services an ELL will receive?
This determination is based on several factors: scores on the W-APT/ACCESS, reading level and teacher input.
How does an ELL exit from the program?
Every year in the spring, ESL students are given a language test (WIDA- ACCESS). Scores on this test determine if the student is proficient enough to access the curriculum without assistance from an ESL teacher or if the student would benefit from continued services. Once students exit the ESL program, they are monitored for 2 years. This is to ensure that they are succeeding without ESL support.
¿Cómo se determina quien es un Aprendiz del Idioma Ingles (ELL)?
Cuando los estudiantes entran a la escuela, los padres completan una encuesta sobre el Idioma del Hogar. Si los estudiantes hablan algún otro idioma aparte de Ingles, se les da un examen (W-APT). El resultado de este examen determina si necesitan ayuda. ESL (Inglés como Segunda Lengua) es un servicio exigido por el estado para aquellos estudiantes que califican.
¿Qué tipo de servicios puede recibir un estudiante de ELL?
Los estudiantes, que necesitan más ayuda con vocabulario hablado, sintaxis, y descodificación de palabras, asisten a una clase que ayuda con esas necesidades. Estas clases Intensas se reúnen todos los días, por 30 minutos. Al progresar, los estudiantes pueden no necesitar esta ayuda adicional y no tendrán que salir de su salón de clases.
Los estudiantes, que están más avanzados, pueden beneficiar de un maestro de ESL que trabaja dentro del salón regular. El modelo de Co-enseñanza le permite al maestro de ESL apoyar el vocabulario y conceptos que están presentados en el currículo.
Los estudiantes, que están aún más avanzados se consideran Transicional. Ellos no necesitan ayuda adicional de un maestro de ESL, pero los maestros de ESL trabajan en colaboración con el maestro del salón para proveer apoyo según sea necesario.
