S.T.E.M. classes offered at SAMS
South Asheboro Middle School in partnership with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension will be offering a series of after school opportunities for middle school students throughout the 2007-2008 school year. “Exploring S.T.E.M. (science, technology and math) In our world today “ will be offered over six sessions – students can attend all six or the one or two of greatest interest.
Class size will be limited to thirty students and will meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30p.m. to 5:30p.m. at the school. All sessions will include community field trips associated with the session topic.
Session I: Exploring Healthy Lifestyles, September 11 – October 4, Cost $24
Youth will learn about good nutrition and exercise. They will prepare healthy recipes, learn to read food labels, eat healthy, make healthy food choices and visit Randolph Hospital. (12 sessions)
Session II: Exploring Environmental Science, October 9 – November 15, Cost $36
Youth will learn to be good stewards of our earth. They will test water quality, work on beautification projects, label storm water drains, visit a recycling center, learn about habitats and begin an Environ-Thon team. (18 sessions)
Session III: Exploring Mechanical Science, November 27 – December 20, Cost $24
Youth will conduct experiments, learn about electricity by making a lamp, and extension cord. They will learn about robotics and make their own robot. (12 sessions)
Mini Session: Science Fair Prep, January 8 – January 17, Cost $12
Want to dazzle the judges this year with your science fair project? This is the session to learn how to complete a top quality science fair project and impress the judges! (6 sessions)
Session IV: Exploring Space, January 29 – March 6, Cost $36
Drawing on NASA materials and activities, youth will explore the solar system, learn about missions to space and make a model rocket. (12 sessions)
Session V: Exploring Plant Life, March 10 – May 8, Cost $48
This session will focus on growing plants, how to care for plants, and how to recognize plant diseases and insects. Youth will spend time in a greenhouse taking part in hands-on projects, in addition a community garden will be grown. This session will culminate in a plant sale for Mother’s Day and field trips will be made to local nurseries. (24 sessions)
To enroll, students can pick up an application from any South Asheboro Middle School teacher or in the main school office. Deadline for Session I is September 11, 2007. A one-time, non-refundable $5 registration fee is required.
