Preliminary state testing data used to calculate federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2008-2009 school year were released today by the NC Department of Public Instruction. These results are preliminary pending State Board approval on August 6, 2009.
“We are extremely pleased with the progress we are making on raising student achievement for all students,” said Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent.
“AYP goals are challenging targets and our staff and students have worked very hard to reach these higher standards. While we celebrate successes at each school, we realize we still have much work to do,” continued Frost.
Asheboro City Schools – 5 school(s) (or 62.5%) out of 8 made Adequate Yearly Progress
Asheboro High School – did not make Adequate Yearly Progress
School met 17 (or 89.5%) out of 19 target goals
North Asheboro Middle School – made Adequate Yearly Progress
School met 27 (or 100.0%) out of 27 target goals
South Asheboro Middle School – made Adequate Yearly Progress
School met 29 (or 100.0%) out of 29 target goals
Balfour School – made Adequate Yearly Progress
School met 21 (or 100.0%) out of 21 target goals
Charles W McCrary School–did not make Adequate Yearly Progress
School met 16 (or 76.2%) out of 21 target goals
Donna L Loflin School – did not make Adequate Yearly Progress
School met 14 (or 82.4%) out of 17 target goals
Guy B Teachey School –made Adequate Yearly Progress
School met 21 (or 100.0%) out of 21 target goals
Lindley Park School – made Adequate Yearly Progress
School met 21 (or 100.0%) out of 21 target goals
For the first time both middle schools achieved AYP. “It is extremely difficult to meet such a large number of targets and I commend both school communities for reaching this milestone,” said Frost.
Balfour, McCrary, and Loflin schools will continue in school choice. Just as it takes two consecutive years not making AYP to get into school choice, it takes two consecutive years making AYP to exit school choice. Parents with children in these three schools will be notified by mail in early August about their choice options.
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a requirement of the federal education law called No Child Left Behind. AYP disaggregates the student achievement data by subgroups to more easily identify groups of students that may need additional help in order to close the achievement gap.
For AYP purposes, a subgroup (school as a whole, white, black, native American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic, multiracial, limited English proficient students, students with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged students) must contain 40 or more students who have been in membership the full academic year. The AYP goals will continue to increase in three-year increments until 100% of students are on grade level as required by 2013-2014.
