Message from the Superintendent
On Tuesday March 8, 2011 there was a discipline incident involving a student bringing a gun onto the campus of North Asheboro Middle School. While federal law prohibits us from discussing the details of the incident, please know that student safety is our top priority. Asheboro City Schools will not tolerate this type of infraction. The Asheboro City Schools Board of Education has adopted what is commonly referred to as a “Zero Tolerance Policy” for this type of infraction. Any violations of this policy result in severe consequences and charges will be filed with the police department. Per our Board Policy 4333, “ As required by law, a student who brings or possesses a firearm or powerful explosive on school property or at a school-sponsored curricular or extracurricular activity must be suspended for 365 days, unless the superintendent recommends and the board approves a modification.”
I would like to commend the administration and staff at North Asheboro Middle School who, in coordination with the School Resource Officer, acted swiftly and appropriately to keep the students and staff safe while maintaining order.
Also, I want to emphasize how important it is in matters like these that our school officials follow due process, completely investigate the disciplinary infraction, involve parents in the student discipline issue, and work cooperatively with law enforcement when charges are filed. These actions require time and due diligence on the part of our school officials before information is released.
This is an event that has not occurred on our campuses for many years. We ask for our community’s help and support to assure that it does not happen again. If you hear of anything that puts our students’ safety at risk, please report it to your school principal immediately. We must all must work together to keep our children safe.
Thank you for continuing to work with us as we strive to provide a safe environment for our students.
