BOE Vacancy application period open
The Asheboro City Board of Education accepted the resignation of board member Derek Robbins Thursday night during their regular meeting. Robbins has accepted a position with Harrell Contracting Group which will require him to relocate to Jackson, Mississippi. He has four years remaining on his six-year term of office, December 2011 – December 2015.
As outlined in Board policy 2110 (Board Member Elections) board service “…can be filled best by persons of sound judgment, broad vision, dedication to the interest of education and unselfish concern for public welfare. As elected representatives of the public, board members are expected to be free from prejudice, bias or commitment to special interests. Any person possessing the qualifications for election to public office as provided for in Article VI, Section 6 of the Constitution of North Carolina and who is a qualified voter and resident of the district from which he/she seeks to be elected will be eligible to serve as a member of the board of education. Any person elected or appointed to the Board and also employed by the board will resign his/her employment before taking office as a member of the board.”
In accordance with Board policy 2115 (Unexpired Term Fulfillment), the Board will accept applications for appointment to the Asheboro City Board of Education. Applications will be available online at http://www.asheboro.k12.nc.us/board_of_education/board_vacancy.aspx or may be picked up at the Central Office, 1126 South Park Street, Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm beginning Friday, October 14. Applications may be hand delivered or mailed and must contain an original signature. No electronic applications will be accepted. All applications must be received by 4:00pm Friday, October 28 for consideration.
Although four years remain on Robbins’ term, the appointed board member will serve until the next election in 2013. At such time they must be elected to complete the remaining two years.
State statute 115C-37 Election of board members reads as follows:
(f) Vacancies of Office – All vacancies in the membership of the boards of education whose members are elected pursuant to the provisions of subsection (a) of this section by death, resignation, or other causes shall be filled by appointment by the remaining members of the board, of a person to serve until the next election of members of such board, at which time the remaining unexpired term of the office in which the vacancy occurs shall be filled by election.
A Nomination Committee appointed by the Board chair will review the applications and select candidates to interview on the evening of November 7. The committee will make a recommendation to the Board at their regular meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 10 at 7:30pm.
Potential board members need to be available to attend Asheboro City Schools new board member orientation on December 13 at 5:30pm in the Central Office board room. They will also be expected to attend Board Member 101 training presented by the North Carolina School Boards Association on January 12 and 13 in Raleigh.
