AHS Class of 2010 SAT scores released

Asheboro High School released the SAT results for the Class of 2010 today. Asheboro High School’s average score in math was 494 and in critical reading was 494, for an average total of 988. The state average for NC was 1008 and the national average 1017.

“We are pleased to see the increase in the critical reading score and that more students participated in the SAT this year, as this is an indicator of the number of students preparing for education beyond high school,” said Mr. Kemper Fitch, AHS principal.

“We have been fortunate to have the GEAR UP grant to support students taking the PSAT and last year provided for all juniors to take the SAT. This really helps send the message to students that post high school education is an expectation and we are here to facilitate the process.”

The Class of 2010 was the fifth to take the new SAT exam which added a third test, writing. The writing section was added to help colleges make better admissions and placement decisions and to reinforce the importance of writing in a student’s education. The writing test includes multiple choice items, grammar usage questions, and a written essay. Additionally, the Verbal test was renamed “Critical Reading.”

Traditionally, the SAT score reflected the combination of two numbers (Math and Verbal). These scores are now reported as the “Sub Total” for comparison purposes. The new “Grand Total” includes all three tests, Math, Critical Reading and Writing. The AHS Class of 2010 had a Grand Total SAT average of 1448, as compared to the NC state average of 1485 and the national average of 1509.

“While we analyze our results each year, our ultimate goal is for individual students to score at a level that allows them to pursue the college or university of their choice,” concluded Fitch.
