2011 SAT Results released

Asheboro High School released the SAT results for the Class of 2011 today. Asheboro High School’s average score in math was 479 and in critical reading was 461, for an average total of 940. The state average for NC was 1001 and the national average 1011.

“I am very pleased to see the increase in student participation, from 65% in 2010 to almost 80% in 2011,” said Dr. Diane Frost, Superintendent.

“We also know that students that challenge themselves by taking more rigorous classes in high school perform better on the SAT and ultimately in college. For example 66% of seniors who took the SAT were enrolled in AP or Honors English courses, and their mean scores were 500 in Reading and 519 in Math for a total of 1019.”

“Likewise, 64% of our test takers were enrolled in Advanced Placement or Honors Math courses, and their mean scores were 496 in Reading and 522 in Math for a total of 1018,” continued Frost.

Traditionally, the SAT score reflected the combination of two numbers (Math and Verbal). These scores are now reported as the “Sub Total” for comparison purposes. The “Grand Total” includes all three tests, Math, Critical Reading and Writing. The AHS Class of 2011 had a Grand Total SAT average of 1384, as compared to the NC state average of 1475 and the national average of 1500.

Average SAT Scores for the Class of 2011

The average scores for the class of 2011 are based on individual students’ scores the last time they took the SAT test, not necessarily their highest SAT score. Please note: the College Board changed its rules for reporting SAT scores in 2011. In 2010, the College Board began including students in its annual cohort for test administrations through March as well as through June, but only reported scores through March. In previous years, the cohort only included students who were tested through March. Scores reported by the College Board in 2011 included all test-takers through June, and are therefore not comparable with released district and schools' scores from previous years.

“While it appears on the surface that our overall scores have declined, the underlying truth is more students than ever are challenging themselves to take the SAT.” said Mr. Kemper Fitch, AHS principal.
