Twelve residents of the Asheboro City Schools district have applied for the vacant seat on the Asheboro City Board of Education.

Applicants include the following Asheboro residents: Gustavo E. Agudelo of 484 Oak Leaf Road, Apt. A; Kristian N. Allen of 100 North Main St.; Amy Johnetta Brower of 833 Morgan Avenue; Hal A. Davis, Jr. of 620 Maple Avenue; Ralph R. Eddy, Jr. of 1652 Sylvan Way; Baxter H. Hammer, of 780 Newbern Avenue; Chris Holland of 911 Amity Road; Kimberly A. Miller-McDowell of 606 Woodland Circle; Gary Steve Morgan of 816 South McCrary St.; Ronald Powell of 1881 Horse Carriage Lane; Marcus Charles Staley, II of 947 Viewmont Drive; and April L. Wilson of 2332 Old Lexington Road.

The Board’s ad hoc committee met Tuesday, November 1 to review all of the applications and determine who the committee will interview. Ad hoc committee members are Kyle Lamb, committee chair, Steve Jones and Jane Redding; Board Chair Gidget Kidd serves as an ex officio member.

“We are very pleased with the number of applicants we had for the vacancy,” said Lamb. “This signifies a strong level of support from the community for our school system and the work of the Board.”

Finalists for the Board vacancy are: Gustavo E. Agudelo, Kristian N. Allen, Chris Holland and Marcus Charles Staley, II. The four chosen for the interview process all have students currently in Asheboro City Schools along with varied backgrounds. Gustavo Agudelo is a former PTO president and a team leader at Klaussner Furniture Industry; Kristian Allen is an Assistant District Attorney for Judicial District 19-B; Chris Holland is an AHS graduate and director of field development for National House of Hope; and Marcus Staley is a building systems engineer with the NC Department of Health Services Regulations, construction section.

The ad hoc committee will meet Friday, November 5 at 5:30pm to interview Chris Holland in the board room at the Central Office, 1126 S. Park Street. The remaining three interviews will be held at the same location on Monday, November 7 beginning at 5:30pm. Both meetings are open to the public.

The seat is vacant due to the resignation of Derek Robbins who accepted a position with Harrell Contracting Group in Jackson, Mississippi. Although four years remain on Robbins’ term, by state statute the appointed board member will serve until the next election in 2013. At such time they must be elected to complete the remaining two years of the term.

In accordance with Board policy, the ad hoc committee will make a recommendation to the Board at their regular meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 10 at 7:30pm. The appointed board member will take the oath of office at the December 8 board meeting along with Gidget Kidd, Kyle Lamb and Jane Redding, all running unopposed in the November 8 general election.
